SYSTEMS INTEGRATION

A reliable integration goes beyond the happy path.

Why retries, ownership and visibility matter as much as connecting two endpoints.

Agree the source of truth

For every field, decide which system owns the authoritative value. Bidirectional synchronization without ownership rules can overwrite valid changes or create an endless update loop. Document mappings, identifiers and conflict behaviour.

Expect partial failures

A network timeout does not always mean an operation failed. The receiving system may have processed it before the response was lost. Idempotency keys, deduplication and bounded retries help prevent duplicate records and accidental repeated actions.

Make errors actionable

A log entry should identify the operation and failure without exposing secrets or unnecessary personal data. Decide which errors can be retried and which need human attention. Include a recovery path for records that remain unresolved.

Test the lifecycle

Test revoked credentials, changed schemas, missing fields, rate limits and repeated events. Keep representative test data and an integration checklist. Review monitoring and maintenance responsibility before the connection becomes operational.
